Concrete Canoe

Students at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona have been competing in the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition since 1993.

The competition is broken into four judged portions:

  • Paddling

  • Oral Presentation

  • Technical Paper

  • Final Product

However, Concrete Canoe is a year round project at Cal Poly Pomona and begins with structural design and analysis.

Once the foam shape of our canoe is CNC'd, construction of the male and female molds are completed by the end of Fall Quarter while the concrete mix is tested and finalized.

Then, with the engineering innovation of the dual-mold pump method for casting, the concrete canoe is pumped into the molds on Place Day!

During the curing and sanding process of the canoe, the Aesthetics Team focuses on creating the Display and Stand for our Final Product.

Year round, the Technical Paper is constantly edited while the Presentation is practiced to perfection.
